PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) is a type of laser eye surgery used to correct vision problems such as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. Unlike LASIK, which involves creating a flap in the cornea, PRK works by reshaping the surface of the cornea directly. This procedure involves the removal of the thin outer layer of the cornea (epithelium) to expose the underlying corneal tissue. A specialized laser is then used to precisely reshape the cornea, improving the eye's ability to focus light correctly onto the retina, thus enhancing vision.

The PRK procedure begins with the application of anesthetic eye drops to ensure comfort during the surgery. The outer layer of the cornea is gently removed, and the excimer laser is then used to reshape the cornea. This part of the procedure typically takes only a few minutes per eye. After the laser treatment, a protective contact lens is placed over the cornea to aid healing and provide comfort. The recovery process for PRK is slightly longer compared to LASIK, as the epithelium needs time to regenerate, typically taking about 3 to 5 days. Most patients experience significant vision improvement within a few weeks, with full stabilization of vision occurring over several months.

Anesthetic eye drops are used to ensure comfort during the procedure, but some discomfort and blurred vision may occur during the initial healing period.

PRK is an effective solution for correcting nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, and it is suitable for patients with thinner corneas who may not be ideal candidates for LASIK.
